Oceanic Mind Science
Mindful science for fisheries, oceans, and the people who depend on them.
We provide scientific and technical expertise in the assessment and management of coastal and marine biological resources, supporting sustainable practices in the face of a changing ocean and growing pressure on natural systems.
Founded by a team of fisheries specialists, we help public and private sector clients navigate complex marine resource issues and make informed management decisions.

What We Do
Fisheries Data Collection Programs
Practical monitoring for better fisheries decisions.

Many fisheries collect large amounts of information while still lacking the data needed to support confident long term management. Monitoring programs often evolve over time and become disconnected from management goals, operational realities, or community priorities.
Oceanic Mind Science helps fisheries, communities, Indigenous organizations, and management agencies develop practical monitoring systems that produce clearer, more useful information. This may include biological sampling, fishery surveys, spatial monitoring, reporting systems, and community based programs that integrate scientific data with fisher observations and traditional ecological knowledge.
The goal is not simply to collect more data, but to improve the quality, consistency, and usefulness of information for long term stewardship.
Stock Assessment & Fisheries Modeling
Assessment approaches matched to the fishery and the data.

Fisheries differ enormously in their ecology, uncertainty, governance, and available information. Some possess decades of monitoring data, while others operate with fragmented records, uncertain stock boundaries, or limited scientific capacity.
Oceanic Mind Science develops assessment approaches suited to the realities of each fishery. Work may include stock assessment modeling, survey design, simulation testing, spatial analyses, uncertainty evaluation, and harvest strategy development.
Particular emphasis is placed on producing advice that is scientifically credible, understandable, and practical for real world management decisions.
Collaborative Resource Management & Conflict Resolution
Science based dialogue for complex resource challenges.

Many marine resource challenges are not purely scientific problems. They emerge where ecological uncertainty intersects with livelihoods, Indigenous rights, cultural values, conservation priorities, and competing visions of sustainable use.
Oceanic Mind Science supports collaborative processes by helping clarify technical questions, communicate uncertainty in accessible language, and develop structured dialogue grounded in evidence and respect. Where needed, we collaborate with certified mediation and conflict resolution professionals to support more transparent, informed, and durable decision making processes.
Small Scale & Emerging Fisheries Support
Locally grounded approaches for communities with limited scientific resources.
Read more Show less
Small scale and emerging fisheries often face a difficult balance between economic dependence, limited institutional capacity, and increasing pressure on marine resources. In many regions, fisheries provide essential livelihoods and food security while operating with limited monitoring, limited enforcement capacity, and little access to long term scientific support.
Oceanic Mind Science supports the development of practical and locally grounded approaches that remain scientifically useful while acknowledging these constraints directly. This may include low cost monitoring systems, community based data collection, adaptive management frameworks, and data limited assessment approaches capable of functioning under imperfect conditions. In these contexts, conflict resolution is often inseparable from management design, because rules that are not trusted, understood, or seen as fair are unlikely to endure.
